What is Keto-Sheto?

The ‘Keto’ in the ‘Keto-Sheto’ means Ketogenic Diet. So, as the name suggests, the website is all about the Ketogenic Diet, general information about this lifestyle and the Ketogenic recipes.

Well, for the meaning of ‘Sheto’ in ‘Keto-Sheto’, please read the last question in this list and ensure that you have gone through all the questions before that.

What is Ketogenic Diet?

Ketogenic Diet is a way of eating that shifts your body from being a sugar burner to being a fat burner. When we cut down on the carbohydrates in our diet and at the same time increase our fat intake, the body switches from using sugar to using fat as its primary source for energy. This state is known as Ketosis and hence the name Ketogenic.

How the Ketogenic Diet works?

Just like Glucose is the byproduct of burning sugar, Ketones are a byproduct of burning Fats in the body. So, when we cut down on our dietary carbohydrates, the body releases fat from adipocytes (fat cells) and in turn produces Ketone bodies which are an excellent source of fuel for almost all the cells in our body.

What kind of fat are we talking about here?

The Saturated Fat (or the good fat) which is derived from animal products i.e. Ghee, Cream, Butter and Cheese. We can also include Extra virgin Olive oil and Coconut oil in this list. So, basically, we have to remove the factory processed Refined oils completely from our diet and that includes the Olive Oil we use for cooking in Indian Homes because that too is processed and refined.

Isn’t the Saturated fat bad for our heart?

For a scientific reply to this question, please read the book Cholesterol Clarity written by Dr. Eric C. Westman and Jimmy Moore wherein the authors explain everything about HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, Total Cholesterol, how the total Cholesterol and LDL have nothing to do with the heart disease and how we can improve our HDL and Triglycerides just by incorporating the Saturated Fats and by removing the carbs from our diet. Its a good read if you want to know the science behind all this Cholesterol thing and heart disease and a must read if you have heart disease or have a heart patient in your family because the information you are having about heart disease (that high total cholesterol causes heart disease) is a century old information and its time to update that knowledge now.

Since I am a common person not from a medical background (I am an engineer by the way), so here is my common sense reply to this question. Saturated fats have a huge history dating back millenia as the only fat that humans used to consume. On the contrary, Vegetables oils (or refined oils) are a recent phenomenon not even dating back a century and their occurrence have a high correlation to all the lifestyle diseases which were non-existent 200-500 years ago.

What about Calories? Isn’t all this fat going to increase our calorie intake?

Again, for a detailed reply to this question, please read the book Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. The author makes a very interesting point that the source (or quality) of the calories matter more than the quantity of the calories. The fat accumulation in our body is not energy (or calorie) imbalance but a hormonal imbalance.

Since I am a person not from medical background (you already know my profession now), so here is my reply to this question. This so called ‘Calories’ funda too is a recent phenomenon. The food should be considered as food instead of ‘Calories’ and if you are really interested in the numbers, you should count the ‘Carbs’ in your servings to limit its intake so that you can adapt to the Ketogenic lifestyle and experience good health.

I am good so far, now please tell me what is ‘Sheto’ in the ‘Keto-Sheto’?

Well, the ‘Sheto’ in ‘Keto-Sheto’ is synonymous with ‘Shoti’ in ‘Roti-Shoti’. All the punjabis reading this must have understood by now what it means. For all the non-punjabis and non-Indians, the ‘Roti’ actually means chapati (flat-bread) which accompanies almost all our meals. Shoti, alone does not mean anything but when used with Roti, it means delicious and it shows affection towards the person who is preparing the food.

Punjabis often say the following words to their spouses or family members when they want to call them out for meal “Aao Roti-Shoti khate hain” (Lets have our meal). So, when I started my Keto journey (in September 2015), whenever i used to hear these lines from my family, I used to say “No, I am on Keto-Sheto” and that is how the name ‘Keto-Sheto’ originated.
